"A Woman Like That"

Fall 2021

This project was to create a book that combined two related texts. I chose the Commencement Address at Wellsley 1996 by Nora Ephron and the poem "Her Kind" by Ann Sexton which I feel as though are in dialogue with each other.

Both pieces explore topics of feeling like an outsider and what womanhood means, so throughout my book I have used women surrealist artists' work to portray that. Using a 5-column grid allowed me to create a quirky and dynamic layout that matches the off-beat artwork and writings. The three stanzas of the poem are split onto three different pages of vellum paper and are placed intentionally through the book as the theme of the speech shifts. I chose a single-page coptic stitch to bind this book because of its handmade and personal quality.
