"Where Does Natural
Gas Come From?"
Booklet Design
Fall 2021
For this project, I was given the following story:
The blue flame under the pot on your stove comes from burning gas. This gas was made in the earth. People drill to find this natural gas. They find it deep down in pockets underground. There it formed and was trapped by layers of rocks years and years ago. Huge pipes are laid to carry the natural gas away. The pipes run for hundreds and hundreds of miles, often over many states. Smaller pipes branch out to streets, to homes, to stoves. Other forms of burnable gas, like propane, are manufactured in processing plants.
From this story, I designed a book using only images, combining my own illustrations with found pictures. I needed to convey the storyline, which was difficult, but this project allowed me to play and illustrate, which is something that I enjoy doing in my free time. Throughout the book, I shift from a macro to micro scale, and show those scale changes through background color. I also use an image motif of pipes throughout, and use magnifying glasses to direct the reader's eye.
